The New Monastery is located just outside Litochoro (3 km) at the location Skala. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><strong> The Old Monastery-<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><strong>Old Monastery was founded by St. Dionysios of Mount Olympus, whose name derives its origin from Olympus, as the first settler-hermit thereof. Near the old monastery, surrounded by a wonderful landscape lies the Cave, where the Saint spent his life as a hermit. Following Divine Revelation, St. Dionysios founded and devoted the Monastery to the Holy Trinity. In the course of time, however, the name of its founder, Saint Dionysios of Olympus, prevailed. It was sited 15 km higher that is current location.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><strong><i>At its northwestern chapel lies the site where St. Dionysios is buried<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9117 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monastiria.gr\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/monastiriaB_agios_dionysios_palaia_moni.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.monastiria.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/monastiriaB_agios_dionysios_palaia_moni.jpg 550w, http:\/\/www.monastiria.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/monastiriaB_agios_dionysios_palaia_moni-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.monastiria.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/monastiriaB_agios_dionysios_palaia_moni-100x67.jpg 100w\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" \/><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><em>\u0399n 1821, Veli Pasha, son of Ali Pasha set the Old Monastery on fire. After a three-day battle Hegumen Methodios Paliouras, was hung along with another 12 Monks at the central Square of Larisa. During the Olympus Revolt, in 1878, the Monastery participated actively, providing a shelter for women and children of Litochoro. During the Macedonian Struggle it served again as a refuge for fighters and a disembarkation station.\u00a0In 1943,\u00a0Nazis destroyed with the use of explosives, because it served as refuge for Greek resistance fighters.\u00a0Since then the Monastery was transferred at the location \u201cMetochi\u201d (New Monastery), where it lies to date<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-9118\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monastiria.gr\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/monastiriaB_agios_dionysios_askitirio.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.monastiria.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/monastiriaB_agios_dionysios_askitirio.jpg 330w, http:\/\/www.monastiria.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/monastiriaB_agios_dionysios_askitirio-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.monastiria.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/monastiriaB_agios_dionysios_askitirio-100x133.jpg 100w\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"440\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-9119\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monastiria.gr\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/monastiriaB_agios_dionysios_palios.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.monastiria.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/monastiriaB_agios_dionysios_palios.jpg 437w, http:\/\/www.monastiria.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/monastiriaB_agios_dionysios_palios-300x178.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.monastiria.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/monastiriaB_agios_dionysios_palios-100x59.jpg 100w\" alt=\"\" width=\"437\" height=\"260\" \/><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><strong>The New Monastery-<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>From 1989 on the Monastery\u2019s entrance prohibition for women (abaton) was restituted, according to the tradition bequeathed by St. Dionysus and the regulations of Mount Athos. \u201cAbaton\u201d includes monks\u2019 cells, workshops, the dining room and the main church (Katholik(c)on) dedicated to the Assumption of the Mother of God, adorned with icons, painted in 1955 by the brilliant hagiographer Fotis Kontoglou.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Outside lies the new, spectacular church dedicated to St. Dionysus, the conference room and the exhibition hall, that can be visited by women.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Holy relics, part of the Holy Cross, icons of the 15th to 19th century and religious relics of great historical and artistic value are kept the new sacristy (Ecclesiastical Byzantine Museum) inaugurated in 1999 by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9120 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monastiria.gr\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/monastiriaB_agios_dionysios_litoxwro3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"295\" \/>The Monastery has developed significant spiritual and charitable activity, with daylong confessions and spiritual doctrines every Sunday morning after the end of the Liturgy, as well as discussions, conferences and overnight vigils.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><strong>Sunday services are held at the pilgrimage church. On all other days, religious services are held inside the abaton. The approximately 25 monks are assigned various tasks, such as: hagiography, incense, cheesemaking, beekeeping, candle making, gardening, carpentry, bookbinding etc.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><strong>On 23 January the Monastery celebrates the Feast Day of Saint Dionysius of Olympus<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9122 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monastiria.gr\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/agios_dionysios.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"359\" \/><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><strong>St. Dionysius, who originated from Thessaly, lived in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century. Before he came to Olympus he held the title of abbot (Hegumen) of \u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Mount Athos Monastery of Philotheou<\/span>, and also spent time at Pelion as hermit.
